  • 2 medium to large sweet onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour gluten-free flour works as a substitute
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch acts as an egg replacer
  • 1 cup water adjust for desired batter thickness
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder adds fluffiness
  • 1 teaspoon salt tweak to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper swap with cayenne for heat
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika or red chilli powder, adjust to preference
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder omit if preferred
For the Coating
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs standard breadcrumbs as substitute if needed
  • 1 tablespoon oil olive or avocado oil for spritzing

Preparation Steps
  1. Peel the onions and slice them into 1 cm thick rings, separating the rings and setting aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cornstarch, water, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Whisk until smooth and thick.
  3. Mix panko breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt and black pepper in another bowl.
  4. Set up a dredging station with bowls of dry flour, the batter, and seasoned breadcrumbs.
  5. Coat each onion ring in the dry flour, dip in the batter, then roll in breadcrumbs before placing on a greased plate.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (392°F) for 3-4 minutes. Arrange coated rings in the basket, spray with oil, and air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  7. Remove onion rings from the air fryer once crispy and golden, let cool slightly, and serve with dips.
