Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by cutting the thick country-style French bread into 1-inch cubes, ensuring a sturdy base that will absorb the egg mixture beautifully.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt until blended and frothy.
  3. Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture, gently stirring until well-coated. Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Grease a casserole dish and layer half of the soaked bread mixture, followed by ham, half of the Gruyere cheese, and half of the bechamel sauce.
  5. Repeat the layering with the remaining bread mixture, ham, Gruyere cheese, and bechamel sauce.
  6. Optional: Crack additional eggs on top and sprinkle with thyme and pepper.
  7. Cover and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh thyme and serve warm.
