Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by cutting the thick country-style French bread into 1-inch cubes, ensuring a sturdy base that will absorb the egg mixture beautifully.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and a pinch of salt until blended and frothy.
- Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture, gently stirring until well-coated. Allow to sit for at least 30 minutes.
- Grease a casserole dish and layer half of the soaked bread mixture, followed by ham, half of the Gruyere cheese, and half of the bechamel sauce.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining bread mixture, ham, Gruyere cheese, and bechamel sauce.
- Optional: Crack additional eggs on top and sprinkle with thyme and pepper.
- Cover and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh thyme and serve warm.

Notes
This dish can be prepared a day in advance or frozen for later enjoyment. Adjust seasoning for personal taste, especially with salt due to salty cheese and ham.
